Virginia is an artist who has been working in the fabric industry for 30 years. A Master of Fine Arts Degree prepared her for a fulfilling life of facilitating the creativity of others. She taught art at three universities before embarking on a career in the fabric and sewing field.
Virginia teaches internationally. She teaches at the International Quilt Festival and Market was named Dollmaker of the Year in 1997. She brings experience and enthusiasm to the class room.
Virginia has designed thousands of fabrics for different fabric companies. She is the art director for Bali Fabrics and designs tea towels and fabric for Indo US Sales. She has a publishing company of fine books and patterns and a history of opening interesting quilt shops in unlikely places.
Virginia teaches options for individual interpretation rather than strict rules. Her students receive inspiration, then information. Lots of "show-and-tell" samples are an integral part of her seminars.
WORKSHOP FEES
The cost is $35 per person each day based on an enrollment of 12 people. Lectures, trunk shows and travel expenses are priced separately.
Travel arrangements are made one month ahead of class. Your workshop will be confirmed in writing. If you have to cancel, please give 30 days notice.
LECTURES
IF MONET WERE A QUILTER...
This trunk show is designed for large groups and takes about an hour. Monet's painting are used as a metaphor to show how color changes a quilt design with several versions of each quilt that show how much color changes the feel of a project.
I MIGHT NOT HAVE ENOUGH FABRIC!
This entertaining trunk show is all about Virginia's love affair with fabric. She brings lots of quilts to illustrate each story. The audience will get an easy color class in the process.
CLASSES
QUILTER'S CHOICE
Pick any project designed by Virginia and learn the technical tricks and shortcuts. Color is always an important part of Virginia's seminars.
COLOR FOR QUILTERS
This one day class will give just a taste of color theory. No sewing is necessary, so the focus is completely on color. The book, color wheel and all fabrics are included in a $25 kit.
GRANDMA'S BUTTON JARS
This could be a half day , evening class or play all day. The kit has everything needed except the jars. The kit fee is $22.50 and will do at least six lids. Learn to make stuffed or felted flowers, and lots of embellishment ideas.
QUILT-AS-YOU-GO BAGS
These strip pieced, bags can be completed in a day! Choose from four different patterns; Bali Bag, Big Bag, Bag Accessories, Bucket Bag or the Princess Purse.
MAKE YOUR POINT !
PERFECT PICKLE DISH OR NEW YORK BEAUTY
Make perfect points with the new see-thru foundation papers. This is Virginia's most popular class. She has even taught it in Spain, in Spanish! Use the new acrylic cutting templates and choose from four different designs to sew.
A NEW TWIST ON THE
OLD FASHIONED WEDDING RING
Learn several new techniques and choose one to start during class. Pick any of the wedding ring patterns to start in class. Learn how to piece curves, match points and applique by hand and machine. There are short cuts for everything!
NOT YOUR GRANDMOTHER'S FAN !
This is an easy class where you can choose from several different patterns. There is no needle turn applique or curved piecing with Virginia's newest techniques. Make a fan or Dresden plate quilt from the many pattern selections.
"STRIP CLUB"
Pick one of eight projects that use 2 1/2" strips. The series of mini quilts are quick and fun to do. Virginia shows all the different techniques and you get to start one in class. Choose from different patterns of miniature fans and Dresden plates, sampler, table runners and basket designs. Some people will complete the quilt in a day.

DOLL MAKING CLASSES
THE JESTER DOLL
This is Virginia's most popular doll class. In two days, learn how to draw & sculpt the face, turn tiny fingers and stuff a doll without lumps.
THE FABRIC PAPER DOLL
Machine applique this reversible doll with scraps onto Timtex interfacing. The art doll design may be changed to personalize the project.
DRAWING CLOTH DOLL FACES
You do not need any art training to succeed in this class. Practice drawing during class and learn which paints, pencils and pens to use. The book "Needle Sculpting Cloth Doll Faces" includes all the techniques for this seminar . A $5 kit fee includes the body fabrics for the practice faces.
SCULPTING CLOTH DOLL FACES
Learn how different fabrics react to stuffing and sculpting by practicing all day on pre sewn heads. Virginia's book "Needle Sculpting Cloth Doll Faces" is used for the text. The $20 kit fee includes the sewn heads, needles, stuffing and thread. Some face painting techniques are also covered.
CLOTH DOLL BODY DRAFTING CLASS
Create your own original doll body design in this is a two day class for experienced dollmakers. Learn to draft a flat, two dimensional drawing into a three dimensional doll body. A clay model is sculpted and draped with muslin. Anatomy is covered as well as some basic dollmaking techniques. A $25 materials fee will cover the cost of modeling clay, & handouts.
DOLLMAKER'S CHOICE
Choose any doll from Virginia's pattern selections for a class. Please have everyone making the same doll.
CLOTH DOLL TRUNK SHOW
This two hour presentation includes a discussion about the art doll aspect of dollmaking. Virginia brings dolls from her private collection for show-and-tell. The event will give the participants lots of ideas and inspiration for dollmaking.
